The World Health Organization suggests health is a state of complete physical, mental or social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.

Physical health includes such characteristics as body size and shape, sensory sharpness, susceptibility to disease and disorders, body functioning, body’s recuperative ability and the ability to perform Activities of Daily Living without any discomfort.

An important aspect of physical health is the musculoskeletal system, which consists of 3 components; muscular strength, Muscular endurance and Muscular flexibility.

To test these parameters for their readiness and proper functionality we do MSA or Musculoskeletal fitness Assessment. An MSA is a Test of the integrated function of muscle strength, muscle endurance, and muscle power. So, why is MSA is so important or why Musculoskeletal fitness. If it is so important then these tests are not available for the general population. Let's answer these questions one by one.

First why these are important. There is a vital link between musculoskeletal fitness and the overall health of the general population. Good Musculoskeletal fitness has been attributed to things like personal independence and better quality of life, lower risk of cardiovascular disease or fracture, and injuries due to falls. It has also been linked to improved cognitive and functional ability.

In simple words, Muscular strength (dynamic) is the maximum force a muscle or muscle group can generate, Muscular endurance is the ability of a muscles or muscle group to perform repeated action for an extended period of time, and Muscle Flexibility which is both dynamic or static, where dynamic flexibility is the opposition or resistance of a joint to motion, and  Static flexibility is the range of motion about a joint. If strength, endurance, and flexibility are not maintained, musculoskeletal fitness is then compromised which can significantly impact physical health.

To perform Activities of Daily Living our body needs to have decent balance and stability, upper and lower body strength, mobility of joints, and flexibility, and all these modalities are dependent on Musculoskeletal well-being.

For an average individual with aging, the performance of daily tasks can become a challenge. Moreover, incidents such as falls, bone fractures become more prevalent and the need for institutional care increases. This trend indicates an increase in musculoskeletal weakness as we age.

As you have understood by now, Musculoskeletal fitness is an important and most under-appreciated component of overall health and well-being. So, in a nutshell, doing exercises based on MSA has numerous benefits. It allows maintenance of functional independence for longer periods in adults while also It impacts the metabolic capabilities of children and adults alike by affecting the ability to maintain ideal body weight. It has been shown to influence the prevalence and possibly the prevention of many musculoskeletal disorders such as muscle sprains, low back pain, osteoarthritis, osteoporosis, shoulder instability, and knee stability and pain.
